I love a recipe that smells up the whole house. These waffles lingered in the air all morning – the crisp apple, the warm spice of the cinnamon, the sweet breadiness of the batter. I know apples tend to be a Fall favorite but I could make this recipe all year round. Bonus points for the aroma!
Domestocrat’s Apple Cinnamon Waffles(makes 6 waffles)
2/3 cups white whole wheat flour (I use King Arthur’s White Whole Wheat)
2/3 cups whole wheat flour (I use King Arthur’s Whole Wheat Flour)
1/2 tsp. salt
3 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. ground flax seed
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. vanilla
1 cup milk (I use Almond Breeze’s unsweetened vanilla almond milk)
2 tbsp. EVOO
2 tbsp. agave
1 apple, peeled and chopped finely
Your choice of waffle toppings: syrup, agave, butter, etc.
First step, mix the dry ingredients (flours, spices, flax, baking powder) in a big bowl until thoroughly combined.
Then add in the wet ingredients (milk, vanilla, egg, oil agave, water), the apples on top, and stir until the batter fully comes together.
Pre-heat your waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s directions, add in the batter (the general rule here is to add the batter to the center of the waffle maker and it will spread outward when the lid is pressed down), and cook per your waffle maker’s instructions. My waffle maker takes about 5-6 minutes to cook. When the waffles are done remove from the waffle maker to cool and add the second round of batter.
Feel free to garnish with whatever you like on your waffles. I use agave as syrup but the possibilities are endless!
