DIY: Favorite Cities Wall Art

As I’ve mentioned, one of my 30 Before 30 Project goals that I have been super excited about has been “Number 14. Make 5 crafty things I’ve seen on Pinterest.” When I saw this adorable wall art someone made of all the places they had been to with their sweetie, I fell in love. John and I love to travel and we definitely have some favorite cities worthy of a project like this. I also thought something like this would be a perfect addition to our gallery wall.

The materials are super simple. You’ll need:

  • A map (more below)
  • Picture frame (I got mine at IKEA)
  • Scissors
  • Double sided tape
  • Heart stencil
  • Pencil

In case you didn’t know, if you are a AAA member you can order maps for free. I mean, obviously they are to be used for navigation and not craft projects but whatever. I ordered a US map online and it arrived in about a week.

I cut a heart stencil out of heavy cardstock (you could use an index card or any other heavy paper). I used the heart to trace around each city’s location on the map.

Next I cut out each city from the map. Following the lines of my stencil was super easy.

We picked four cities: Boston (where we live), Fort Myers, Florida (where we got engaged and visit annually), Chicago, Illinois (where we spent my birthday last year and stopped at on our cross country road trip), and Portland, Oregon (where we honeymooned and plan to visit on our wedding anniversary every year).

I used double sided tape to stick each heart on to a piece of backing paper, set up in a square.

I placed the paper into the frame and secured the back. All done!

John did his part to help by hanging our new art.

Finished! I think this new wall art is the perfect addition to our gallery wall.

  1. I’m impressed! And I love your gallery wall. And you are not the only person to request maps from AAA and then use them for, ahem, crafty projects. :)

  2. I love this idea!! very inspired now to have a go with this project and find some suitable maps!! It’s a post that should be shared, so I have nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award :) details can be found in my post http://wordswithnannaprawn.com/2012/08/04/award-relay-pass-the-baton/ but please don’t feel like you have to follow all the rules, it’s more an acknowledgement of which blogs first came to mind when I had to think of who else to nominate!

  3. Great idea. My husband is obsessed with geography. I used a map to cover a mat once and frame the picture taken where we traveled. I like this idea a lot. And I love a great gallery wall. Good job.
