It’s a good day when you come home to a package from the King Arthur Flour Company.
Enclosed were my last three birthday presents from John. (I, obviously, picked them out. As brilliant as my husband is, I’m sure he has no idea what diastatic malt powder is.)
I got espresso powder, diastatic malt powder, and a classic sourdough starter.
Let me explain.
First, espresso powder increases the depth and flavor of any chocolate dish. Since I don’t drink coffee or espresso I had no idea where to get it. But I trust the KAF Company so I thought I’d give theirs a try. Second, diastatic malt powder is used in conjunction with yeast to give homemade breads a strong rise, good texture, and hearty crust. I hear it’s fabulous when making bagels. Can’t wait to try it. Lastly, the sourdough starter. I’ve been obsessed with sourdough lately and have wanted to make my own. It’s a little scary since you need to get the timing just right on it but I’m excited to give it a shot! I’m going to start feeding it tomorrow when I get home from work. Stay tuned!
