My only resolution for 2013 has been to Take Care Of Me. To me, Take Care Of Me is a life philosophy: when I’m happy, I’m my best self. It’s that simple. January was great, I hit some road blocks in February, had both an injury and progress in March, kept it status quo in April, had an adventurous May, kickstarted my routine in June, kept the momentum going in July, remarked on the unremarkable in August, and blurred through September. Let’s see how October went!
October was great, maybe one of the best months this year. It started out extremely busy at work and with a lot of disrupted sleep so I took the opportunity to try a few new techniques to manage stress and decompress every day. One was to take The Walk – just walk away when I was feeling stuck, overwhelmed, frenzied, or burnt out. Another was to write a next day to do list before leaving work everyday. These things definitely helped and improved my productivity and focus.
I also did a lot to manage my Imposter Syndrome feelings (you know, the stupid voice in your head that tells you you’re a phony). This is a thing I keep seeing pop up more and more, despite having felt this way myself for years. I found this article on how to overcome imposter syndrome to be very helpful and, turns out, I was actively doing some of these things already without even knowing it.
In addition to those things, October was also filled with fun. My birthday is in October and I find that the older I get, the more I extend the celebration over the course of the entire month. And that is exactly what we did.
The weekend before my birthday we saw All The Way, a play at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge about Lyndon B. Johnson – starring none other than Bryan Cranston (and Michael McKean, for any SNL fans). It was brilliant, the show was engaging and perfectly cast.
I don’t know why but I was craving an old school ice cream cake as my birthday dessert so that happened too. It was unapologetically good!
I also had a little bit of birthday money so I splurged on new gym sneakers, backpack, work/winter clothes, and wallet. I also picked up my birthday gift at Sephora and bought a few new lipglosses too. Win!
October was also made most excellent by my beloved Red Sox winning the World Series and Halloween, of course.
Last but not least, we spent the last week of October in Charleston, South Carolina – a final extended birthday celebration in itself. Hang tight though, that will be another blog coming soon.
All in all, a great month of merriment. Now on to winter weather and the holidays!
