Take Care of Me: March Update

domestocrat on Instagram - Mozilla Firefox 412013 113143 AMMy only resolution for 2013 has been to Take Care Of Me. To me, Take Care Of Me is a life philosophy: when I’m happy, I’m my best self. It’s that simple. January was great, I hit some road blocks in February, and now have another month in the history books. Let’s see how March went:

Well first and foremost, I hit another roadblock. Sometime around the beginning of the month I started having this awful pain in my lower back and right hip. I stretched, used the heating pad, took ibuprofen but it got worse and worse. To the point where I couldn’t bend over, put on my shoes, or sit consecutively without writhing in pain. Working out felt fine so I kept that up. After some Googling I narrowed it down to sciatica or an SI joint injury. On 3/18 I finally went to my doctor who confirmed it was an SI joint inflammation. She recommended rest, ice, and the mega ibuprofen she prescribed to me. So I did all that, turned my morning workouts into morning walks, and hoped for the best. I also dabbled with acupuncture too. My doctor ok’ed it as “the best non-invasive pain relief solution” I could try. I went twice – on 3/20 and 3/26 – but couldn’t tell if it was making it better or not. I started to get some relief at the end of the month but am still unsure what helped – rest, ice, stretching, pain relievers, acupuncture, new sneakers, etc. In fact, I’m not entirely sure what caused it in the first place. I think work stress may have been the cause and that has subsided so that could be another factor too. As of right now I’m not 100% better yet but think I’m getting there. We’ll see.

Even with an injury I’m still feeling pretty good. I kept up my morning work out routine on purpose so I wouldn’t get out of the habit. I know my weight loss hasn’t been great due to some Eat Weekends but I’m not beating myself up about it. I’ve been sleeping alright, juicing every morning, purposefully being more social, planning my weekends so that I feel both productive and relaxed, and I got rid of my car. These were all really good things for March!

Because I’m a bit of a stats nerd, let’s look at some numbers for the first quarter of the year, shall we?

Total Lbs. Lost and Maintained: Roughly 5 lbs.
Total Workouts: 45 (in 90 days) – 50% of the time
Total Workouts By Month: 15 in January, 10 in February, 20 in March
Total AM Workouts Before Work: 24 out of 45 workouts
Total Days of Logged Calories on Lose It app: 66 (out of 90 days) – 73% of the time
Total Days With Juice For Breakfast: 60 (out of 90 days) – 67% of the time
Total “Real” Pushups I Can Do In A Row: 5

It may seem a bit clinical but looking at these numbers definitely helps in terms of creating concrete goals for the next quarter. It also reminds me that Taking Care Of Me is more than just weight loss. It’s definitely also about money, how I’m feeling mentally, my marriage, work, and a whole bunch of other things. I tend to find those other things more personal or, in general, things I don’t want to share here in such quantitative ways. I hope that makes sense.

Still, I’m ready for Spring. Bring on April!
