Breakthrough Moment

After I left the ass kicking of my life tonight (i.e. my new pilates class) I had a thought…

On one hand being physically fit is amazing, you build on a solid foundation of skill during every workout to be the best at whatever you love (yoga, running, martial arts, etc). You are an inspiring powerhouse; nothing can stop you. But being on the absolute opposite end of the fitness spectrum is kind of amazing too. Well, it’s awful, but hear me out. You have nowhere to go but up. You can only improve. You can only learn and learn and learn. When you’re an accomplished runner, let’s say, there’s so much pressure to keep up that level of training because your body loses it so quickly. (Don’t get me wrong here, I’m working on my fitness to try to get back into crazy runner shape.) But right now, instead of being terrified of getting my butt back to the gym everyday or trying to walk confidently into a new pilates class full of sinewy size 2’s, I’m looking on the bright side of things. I’m excited and hopeful and optimistic. About getting in shape. Even if I am at the bottom of the barrel.

  1. One thing I love about pilates, is that as long as you’re consistent there is always progress. Next week, you will be a little stronger than this week. So, even if life takes over, and all of sudden you’re holding a pose for 8 seconds instead of 10, it really won’t take long until you’re at 12 and then the whole backwards step means nothing. Yay!
